Pierre CHAMPAGNE began studying the cello at the age of ten at the Boulogne Regional Conservatory of Music as pupil of Jean BRIZARD.

His results were brilliant and he was awarded First Prizes in Cello and Chamber Music. As a result he was first in the list of pupils accepted at the Paris National Superior Conservatory of Music.

He was awarded First Prizes in Cello and Chamber Music in 1978

After studying in London as a pupil of the great Bulgarian soloist S. Popov, Pierre CHAMPAGNE became the first French cellist to receive a bursary to study at the Tchaikowsky Conservatory of Music in Moscow. He worked under the direction of Natalia CHAKHOVSKAIA.

CONCERTS

Pierre CHAMPAGNE divides his time between teaching and giving concerts. He performs in France and abroad : in Paris, in Lille, at the Radio France Festivals and at the Villa Médicis in Roma.

His repertory includes important works for Cello, Chamber Music : sonatas, trios, quartets, quintets, as well as first productions of contemporary music in Radio France

RECORDINGS

Pierre CHAMPAGNE, who has already made three CDs with the Opus Trio, has recently recorded Astor PIAZZOLA's "Le grand Tango" (ref:4916) for piano and cello for the Mandala Harmonia Mundi label.

Getting to Know the Cello, Combre Ed.

Pierre CHAMPAGNE teaches in the Conservatory in the 7th arrondissement of Paris. In collaboration with his wife, Annie BALMAYER, he has written a cello manuel "Getting to Know the Cello" for Combre the Publisher.
